Great Expectations
"We live in such a world of branding and commercialism,
this film makes you laugh at the reality that soon enough, the reef make actually not be so "great". Hilarious."
A note from Presiding Tropfest Judge: Morgan Spurlock
“We have a problem, it’s this reef of yours… we’ve had complaints of false advertising.”
GREAT EXPECTATIONS is a comical tale of how to market a reef. After you’ve destroyed it…
In the not too distant future, Australia has a big problem. The Great Barrier Reef is just not ‘Great’ anymore. People are complaining, tourists are unhappy, and finally the department of Fair Trading has stepped in. How will our heroes keep the tourist dollars flowing to a park that is just.. not that ‘great’ anymore?
THE PRESENT:
The Great Barrier Reef is at risk from rapid industrialisation. The Australian Government is allowing tens of millions of tonnes of seabed to be dredged in World Heritage waters, to make way for 4 mega ports, serviced by up to 7,000 industrial ships crossing the Reef every year.
#ReefReels is a short film competition launched by GetUp! to motivate and encourage filmmakers and environmentalists alike to create short films with a focus on the issues currently surrounding the Great Barrier Reef.
