Interview by Lily Spencer
Jade Alexander is the producer of latest interactive film, THE COMPLEX, here she shares with me her thoughts, and drive behind making this film and being a producer. WHY are you a producer? to tell fantastic stories. I love stories that are distinctly separate from our world but also reflect our world. -What do you love about producing, and interactive film in particular? I love the idea of audience interaction in all media. I've experienced it with immersive theatre show I did - Ex Libris Macabre, where the audience got to participate, adding to the show, changing the experience of it each night. I had it with experiential event for Asics, where we immersed the audience into a world that was divided by light, and created an experiment called Black Out, where we took away runners senses, using dark running track, spotlight, white noise sound bed, and then tested them in the light with their music, and bright light. Each time I get to do something new where the audience can experience a new way of telling a story - I get excited. What does the audience like? What speaks to them? What do they bring to the table? -What's been your most memorable project to date? The Complex has been the most memorable, as it was the most challenging, the most intricate, complex and also the most exciting. Its been a 6 year journey to get here, (releasing on gaming platforms) and there have been definite ups and downs. The budget and time frame were incredibly challenging, but on the plus side doing something no one else has done before (interactive sci-fi film) and creating the mould for something we hope to continue doing! -What's your philosophy when it comes to producing? To tell an entertaining story that leaves the audience thinking. I like to challenge perceptions, and create stories that make you see the other point of view, and potentially educate people! But never get too didactic or preachy. Telling stories is one of the oldest traditions in the world, myths, histories are all part of this culture. Sometimes only a story can help someone see the situation from another point of view, or challenge a previously held misconception/notion. -Do you love high-end work, or do you get the deepest sense of satisfaction delivering amazing results on tight budgets?) I love both for different reasons. Bigger budgets like those on Samsung 3D projections commercial means we can play with very exciting new toys and be at the cutting edge of filmmaking. Wheras working on a lower budgets means more creativity is needed to solve problems and that can actually make the project better! -You've been invited to participate in your dream panel or guest lecture. Who is on the panel? And Who is your audience, and are you most excited to share with them? To answer your final question first, the audience is made up of sci-fi fans, film fans, and I'm excited to share a new story (film.project or interactive film) with very creative cast and filmmakers. My dream panel: Joss Whedon (controversial now but still a fantastic writer), Julie Taymore (director), and Barbara Broccoli (Bond producer) and Lauren Shuler Donner (X Men etc producer) -What do you think most sets you apart as a producer? Oh hard question! I guess for me my passion for telling fantastical (my word!) stories, production minded thinking and the technical projects I've worked on. Having worked on early 3D filming including doing the first aerial and underwater 3D in Australia, working on 4D cinema projects, 3D projections, macro filming, immersive theatre and now interactive film gives me a technical edge that not many other producers have. Finally where can we see THE COMPLEX? THE COMPLEX is the worlds first live action interactive sci-fi film. It is released on the 31st of March 2020 and is available worldwide on Playstation, Xbox, Switch and Steam for Mac and PC.
